In practice

This is where those values ended up: a finished deck, built for evenings outside.

It starts with trust

Especially when it's your money.

I show up.

I stay involved.

I return your calls.

I don't cut corners.

I don't vanish mid-project.

I design with care, and I build relationships the same way.

Clients trust me because they know what to expect. I've earned it, project after project.

About Avril

Design experience. Council know-how.
Thirty years of getting things done.

I am a SACAP-registered Architectural Professional with more than 30 years of hands-on experience in architectural design, technical drawing and building plan submissions throughout the Western Cape.

Over those three decades, I have developed something that can't easily be learned from a textbook: an in-depth, practical understanding of how the local approval process actually works.

I have extensive experience working with municipal planning and building officials, many of whom I have known and worked with for decades. That relationship helps: I understand the National Building Regulations and Land Use Management regulations, including the often-complex requirements around departures and other planning applications, and I manage Heritage Western Cape submissions wherever a heritage permit is required.

"I don't just draw the plans. I help get them approved."

Getting a beautiful set of drawings onto paper is only part of the job. The real work often begins once those drawings reach Council, where knowing the process can be the difference between an application that moves quickly and one that stalls for months.

I know what information is required, how applications need to be presented, and how to navigate the approval process efficiently. My assistant obtains copies of previously approved building plans where required, and keeps track of submissions and correspondence with Council. We actively follow up on applications rather than simply submitting them and hoping they don't disappear into the municipal black hole.

The result is a service that's personal, practical and proactive, at every stage of a project.

Most of my projects aren't simply "projects." They're someone's home, their renovation, their dream, or a long-awaited change to the way they live. I enjoy working closely with clients to turn what they have in their heads, sometimes a very rough idea, into something practical, beautiful and doable. And after more than 30 years, I still love the process.

The person behind the plans

Good design doesn't have to shout.

When I'm not drawing, designing or chasing up building plans, you'll usually find me somewhere in the African bush.

I think spending time in nature has probably influenced my approach to design more than I realise, an appreciation for simplicity, proportion, natural materials and buildings that belong where they are.

After 30+ years in the business, I still believe good design simply has to work beautifully for the people who live with it.
